Expensive and difficult: voting rules are tough on migrant workers
Article Abstract:
The factory workers who have powered much of Thailand's economic growth remain effectively disenfranchised by archaic voter-registration laws. Most remain registered in their home provinces, where they hope to return someday, and the process of changing registration is time-consuming and requires travel. Some 3 million of Bangkok's workers come from upcountry regions. Politicians show little interest in helping, as the new votes might hurt many of them, and labor unions have little money to contribute.

Article Abstract:
The growing shift towards democracy in Thailand over recent years has brought increasing protests from ordinary people about injustices such as forced resettlement. However, these protests are not welcomed by politicians, businessmen and the police, and it is common for protestors to encounter intimidation and violence. Despite this, some victories have been won by new groups such as the Forum for the Poor.
