Rusal nears deal to form metals giant

Rusal Ltd. of Russia is to purchase Sual Group also of Russia and the aluminum assets of Glencore International AG of Switzerland. The new aluminum industrial would be valued at approximately $30 billion. The new company would rival Alcoa Inc. of the United States as the largest producer of aluminum worldwide with estimated production of 4.4 million tons per year.

Alcoa may spend up to $1 billion on Iceland smelter

Alcoa Inc. of the United States is planning to build a second smelter in Iceland with a productivity level of 250,000 metric tons per year by 2010, at a cost of $1 billion. Ipsco to buy NS for $1.46 billion in steel-tube push
