SHODDY TREAT - WOOL AND WOOLLEN PRODUCTS
Article Abstract:
The exports of wool and its products fetched a revenue of Rs3,754.26 crore in 1997-98 (Rs3,284.38 crore in 1996-97). For the period between April-August 1998, exports of woollen products fetched a revenue of Rs923.85 crore (Rs671.93 crore). The revenue from yarn, woollen hand woven textiles, shawls, woollen ready- made garments and knitwear. Exports of hand knotted carpets was Rs1,600 crore in 1997-98, which is expected to increase to Rs3,000 crore by 2000 AD. The Indian woollen industry is subjected to various levies and taxes. The government of India has levied Stamping Regulations on imported tops, yarns and fabrics. The shoddy industry makes woollen blankets, recycled wool blended cloth and tweeds and blazers for domestic consumers. It is a small and medium scale industry and it has asked the government of India to treat it at par with hand made carpet sector, which is given concession in import and excise duties. (rk)

Exports of wool and woollen products touched Rs1660.44 crore during April 1998 - January 1999 against Rs1731.53 crore during April 1997 - January 1998. The Wool and Woolens Export Promotion Council has set an export target of Rs2495.74 crore for 1998-99 against actual exports worth Rs1948.29 crore in 1997-98. A target of Rs907.10 crore has been fixed for exports of woollen readymade garments for 1998-99 against Rs708.09 crore in 1997-98. But actual exports have fallen by 11 percent to Rs571.65 crore in the first 10 months of 1998-99 against Rs643.50 crore in the first 10 months of 1997-98. An export target of Rs596.29 crore has been fixed for woollen knitwear for 1998-99 against actual exports worth Rs465.46 crore in 1997-98. (khr)
