SONATA SOFTWARE: GOOD GAINS, LOW RISKS

Sonata Software (SS) markets imported software products from international vendors in India. This business accounts for 55 percent of its turnover. Its software and export of its products account for 40 percent, business solutions 4 percent and consulting 1 percent of its turnover. It has tied up with Scala International of Sweden for marketing Scala Business Solutions in India. SS is floating its initial public offer (IPO) to raise Rs22.70 crore. It has priced its share at a premium of Rs80. The issue proceeds will be used for expansion of its facility in Bangalore. SS issued bonus shares in the ratio 13:10 in September 1998, which increased its equity to Rs7.47 crore from Rs3.25 crore. Raheja and Ghia, the promoters of SS, hold 31 percent stake each and the employees 30 percent in SS. The equity is likely to increase to Rs10 crore after the IPO. The promoters will hold 47 percent, employees 23 percent and the public 25 percent stake in SS. (rk)

MAGIC SOFTWARE IN PLAN TO SET UP `UNIVERSITY' IN INDIA

The $38 million Magic Software Enterprises (MSE) of Israel has proposed to set up a Magic University in India. This university will help Indian software developers to maximise the potential of Magic development tools and increase their value within their organisations as application developers. MSE has already set up its development centre called Magic Infotech India Pvt Ltd (MII) at Pune. MII has tied up with Sankhya Infotech of Hyderabad to offer training, which will begin in Bangalore in partnership with Span. Later, it will be offered in Mumbai and Pune. In MII, 15 percent stake is held by MSE, 15 percent by Nextstep Infotech and 10 percent by Datapro. The remaining is with the promoters and employees. (gsh)

Intelligroup Asia Pvt Ltd (IAPL) of Hyderabad has tied-up with Sun Microsystems India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) to set up an authorised Java training centre (AJTC) in Hyderabad. IAPL is a 100 percent subsidiary of Intelligroup Inc of US. SMIPL plans to set up 30 AJTCs in India. It plans to offer training for in-house professionals and outsiders also. It will offer 40 hour/five day courses and intake will be limited to 16 per batch. The AJTC will offer eight different Java programming courses from beginner to advanced levels. (rk)
