Savoy Theatre: restored and built on
Article Abstract:
The rebuilding of the Savoy Theatre following an extensive fire in 1990 has taken into account both the building's Art Deco origins and the need for latest theatrical technology. The rebuilding, with architectural design being undertaken by Whitfield Partners, included the addition of two new storeys featuring a health club and swimming pool. The flexibility of the building has been greatly improved, as it can now stage opera, ballet and musicals, and it has been returned to the lyric playhouse which it was originally intended to be. Extensive cost and design details are given.

A burning problem
Article Abstract:
The new fire station at Bathgate, Scotland is a distinctive landmark but its design was based entirely on functionality. The fire station is situated on a roundabout and comprises a two-story radial building linked to the rectangular appliance room. The round structure cuts the time required for crews to assemble in the central muster area in an emergency. All the emergency functions are at ground level while the upper level provides a restful atmosphere for the crews' recreation facilities.
