Insurers face claims flood after storms

Article about how European insurers have spent much of the year preparing for millennium problems, but are instead about to receive billions of dollars in damages from the hurricane-force storms that hit the Continent last week. Lothar and Martin could become the most expensive insurance loss for Europe. French reinsurer Scor SA estimates that the damage caused by flooding, loss of power, and thousands of uprooted trees could mean over $5 billion (Euro4.97 billion) in insured losses, finishing the second-biggest year for natural disasters this century.
