Article Abstract:
The failure of US Pres. Bill Clinton to attend the Nov. 17, 1998 meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation in Malaysia could have dealth a big blow on the region's transition to free markets. Clinton should have attended the meeting to assure South East Asian leaders that the US continue to support thier effort towards market liberalization and at the same time criticized Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad for his failure to adhere to free-market principles and his failure to support human rights.

Analysts see promising signs: interest is reviving in Indian, Pakistani markets

Markets in India and Pakistan is recapturing the interest of a number of fund managers four months since the two countries separately ignited nuclear devices and sparked a market freefall. Analysts cite several auspicious signs that the pharmaceutical and software sectors in India may recover. However, they are less certain that the Pakistan market will benefit from these factors since it is less responsive to foreign investment.

Mongolia struggles with painful reforms
Article Abstract:
Trial and error describes Mongolia's shift to the market economy, as its political and economic leaders contend with the dislocation produced by the economic shift. The release from Soviet rule of the country has enabled the state to experiment with a mix of democracy and communism in its political and economic system to find a middle ground that satisfies its need for development.
