Concrete quarterly
Article Abstract:
The emphasis of office building construction is now on the function rather than the form. The use of concrete in the Scottish Office in Edinburgh is described. Peaks and troughs of temperature are smoothed out by the concrete's thermal mass, and the concrete structure forms an elegant solution. Concrete's use in frameworks and roves is also discussed as well as research being undertaken at BRE's Large Buildings Test Facility, aimed at change the perception of concrete buildings.

An artificial form that need not be limited to mimicry. (Concrete Quarterly)
Article Abstract:
Concrete can be enriched with aggregates and textured to give it a 'natural' quality. It can also be coloured and formed into any shape, and patterned in relief or inlaid with different grouts. Its artificiality need not be obscured and it can be used to convey ideas, rather than copy other natural things.
