Shunted sideways: many generals shifted in military house-cleaning
Article Abstract:
The ongoing military revamp in Thailand aims to rid the service of abusive officers and put an end to their ambition to control the political machinery. The revamp was called after the bloody May 1992 demonstration wherein military men were identified tobe responsible for the violence that erupted. Among the officers who were stripped of their ranks and posts for their involvement in the bloodshed were Kaset Rojananin, former supreme commander and air force chief, Issarapong Noopakdi, former army commander, and Chainarong Noonpakdi, former 1st Army Region commander.

Security embrace: Thai-US defence ties regain lost ground
Article Abstract:
Thailand Foreign Ministry's request before the US State Dept for a bilateral security meeting remains as speculation with the administration of Bill Clinton due to its emphasis on human rights and democracy instead of military initiatives. The Feb 1991 coup and May 1992 violence between military and pro-democracy demonstrators has put the relationship of Thailand with the US on hold until the election of Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai in Sep 1992. However, Thailand's trade interests with the US have prompted the country to improve its ties with the US.

Soldiers' soldiers: annual military reshuffle stresses professionalism
Article Abstract:
Thailand's annual promotions of senior military officers on Oct 1, 1993 featured the shunning of those deemed responsible for the May 1992 slaughter of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators by army troops. Army commander General Wimol Wongwanich's choices for promotion emphasized ability, education, professionalism and non-interference in politics. The country's military class system no longer determines the awarding of promotions.
