Simulation optimization with qualitative variables and structural model changes: a genetic algorithm approach

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a simulation-optimization process wherein the qualitative variables and system structure are influenced by optimization. The process supported a genetic algorithm coupled with an automatic simulation-model generator. Simulation frameworks were automatically produced using an object-oriented process and analyzed for different candidate system configurations. Results indicated that the process can effectively generate models for a broad range of flexible manufacturing systems.

Flexible machine layout design for dynamic and uncertain production environments

Article Abstract:

A flexible machine layout design procedure was created to resolve a machine layout design problem. The procedure takes into consideration the machine arrangement and the material handling expenditures to formulate a cost-effective machine layout. Unlike other layout methods, the new procedure utilizes a computationally effective heuristic instead of the quadratic assignment problem (QAP)-based enumeration strategy.

Integrating design and production planning considerations in multi-bay manufacturing facility layout

Article Abstract:

The development of a new mathematical model that integrates layout design and production planning to prescribe efficient multi-bay manufacturing is explored in a study. The need to distribute department replicas throughout the facility is addressed by the model, which also extends the use of product and process requirements as problem parameters in order to increase process routing flexibility.
