Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. has carefully invested internationally, and its largest obstacle to more overseas acquisitions may be its 78% ownership by the Singapore government. Outgoing chairman Koh Boon Hwee believes that the company's cautious investment strategy has been successful, because bad deals can ruin a business.

The prolonged recession in Singapore has led to the loss of jobs for over 5,000 people in the first two quarters of 2001, with the government expecting an estimated loss of at least 20,000 jobs by year's end. The government is still seeking skilled foreigners for jobs, which is a very unpopular policy with some Singaporeans.
