Singapore's "safe haven" status is shaken, but not broken
Article Abstract:
Conditions in Singapore's financial markets are relatively favorable despite fluctuations and stock volatility resulting from the regional currency crisis. Economic analysts negated reports that the stock market showed signs of sluggish growth during the early part of 1998, citing the fact that total loan portfolio improved from 1.5% to 2% during the period. They add that fears associated with the weakening of stock markets were triggered by lack of information among investors. Despite such improvements, investors must be able assess and adapt efficiently with interest rate fluctuations.

Cool on red-chip sector
Article Abstract:
Many stock market experts warn against buying red-chip shares, or China-controlled firms listed in Hong Kong, amid renewed interest in the red-chip shares. Few experts anticipate that Hong Kong's unstable stock market can reward efforts to boost funds for purchases via new share issues. Furthermore, in light of wide beliefs that China's economy will slow in 1998, earnings growth at numerous red-chip companies may also suffer.

Hong Kong IPO deluge prompts request
Article Abstract:
A deluge of initial public offerings on Hong Kong's stock exchange prompted market watchers to request for a second board. Analysts believe a second board will help diversify the market and help investors in identifying the riskier stocks. Others suggest that start-up ventures, second-liner companies and those with difficulty meeting existing listing requirements should belong to the second board.
