Single Sky provokes swift response
Article Abstract:
The EU is developing regulatory framework for the implementation of the European Single Sky Policy, according to EU Transportation Commissioner Loyola de Palacio. Single Sky will cover safety, economic conditions of service provision, design and use of airspace, civil-military coordination, and technical aspects of air traffic control. Palacio adds that the establishment of Single Sky will allow infrastructure and service operators to meet current and expected deman for air transport.

Telecommunications upgrade
Article Abstract:
The FAA will select the contractor for the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program by the middle of 2001. The FTI will develop a ground-to-ground network that will support routing, switching, network management and control of the US' airspace system. Three consortiums are vying for the FTI contract led by Harris, Lockheed Martin and MCI. The Harris team includes Raytheon, Bellsouth, Qwest while the Lockheed Martin group has AT&T, ARINC, Motorola, JTA and SETA.

EU blueprint
Article Abstract:
The EU has developed a strategic plan for improving cooperation on aeronautics research among its member-nations. The plan calls for the creation of an Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe, which will coordinate individual national programs with that of the EU. The EU is aiming for the establishment of an air traffic system capable of handling 16 million flights annually with 24-hour operation of airports and more passenger comfort.
