Bonsai collecting is thought to have started in China, later spreading to Japan by at leat 1309. Bonsai trees tend to be triangular and are cultivated to represent the forces of nature such as rain and wind. They should have thick stems, and can have plants or rocks for decoration, but not figures of people. An auction of bonasai is to be held by Sotheby's in London, England, in Jun 1999. Bonsai are seen as helpful for urban dwellers who miss seeing greenery.
