Social climbers: Thai youth look for kicks - and status - in bottles and pills
Article Abstract:
Thailand in general and the northern city of Chiang Mai in particular have seen teenage drug use and other social ills escalate along with per-capita income. Many social workers and mental health experts say indebtedness, a breakdown in traditional family structures, and peer pressure to rebel contribute to this trend. Alcohol, heroin, and amphetamines have all entered widespread use in the middle class, helping to spread AIDS. The pursuit of the higher income that now represents status leaves many parents little time for their children.

Long live the King: turn-of-the-century Thai monarch enjoys new surge of popularity
Article Abstract:
King Chulalongkorn of Thailand is enjoying a resurgence of popularity 85 years after his death. Many worshipful fans gather nightly at his statue in Bangkok's Royal Plaza to offer gifts and donations to the memory of the man who opened Thailand up to the West as well as abolishing slavery, reforming laws and administration, and introducing modern education. Some observers claim the adulation reflects a modern search for the ideal state, or the inability of Theravada Buddhism to address modern strains and problems.

Advice and consent; monarch's moral influence prevails in crises
Article Abstract:
King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand has restored the role of the monarchy since he ascended the throne in 1946 and today plays a central role in the country's political and cultural life. Despite the fact that his powers are actually quite limited under the constitution, Bhumibol exercises enormous influence and authority in Thailand. In May 1992, the king intervened between the military and pro-democracy demonstrators to end bloody clashes only by issuing a few words.
