Italy elected its first left-leaning government for the first time since the end of World War II in elections held in 1996. The small-margin victory of members of the Olive Tree coalition, Refounded Communists and Party of the Democratic Left could provide a lasting government for Italy.

Local elections across Italy on Apr 27, 1997, produced confusing results due to the broad range of parties and party factions that were represented. One clear loser was Northern League leader Umberto Bossi, whose Milan representative Marco Formentinni received only 15% of the vote.
