Sonera Group Oy posted a rise of 12% in its pretax earnings for the 1998 year. The earnings growth resulted from the company's gains in its associated foreign firms. Sonera's pretax profits before extraordinary items improved to 2.06 billion markkaa ($383.6 million) in 1998. In 1997, the telecommunications firm's pretax profits reached 1.84 billion markkaa.
