Spar auf gro er Einkaufstour: "Wollen nicht nur Pam Pam kaufen"
Article Abstract:
Spar Warenhandels AG, with a group turnover of Sch 42.42bn the second-largest trading group in Austria, wants to grow further through acquisitions. Spar made a takeover offer for Meinl's hypermarket chain Pam Pam, which is for sale, and is on the lookout for further acquisition targets in Austria. Such targets could be the Maxi stores, or the Zielpunkt and Magnet chains of German Tengelmann group. Particularly in Vienna Spar is interested in outlets of at least 500 square metres of selling area. Since new stores are hardly possible, acquisitions are regarded as the solution. With regard to possible concerns of the Cartel Office about a market dominating position, Spar argues that it plays only a minor role in eastern Austria so far.

AUSTRIA: LICENCES TO PRIVATE RAILWAY OPERATORS
Article Abstract:
Graz-Koflacher Eisenbahn GesmbH (GKE) and Wiener Lokalbahnen will be the first private rail transport operators in Austria. They are the first companies to have been granted a national licence for passenger and freight transport. While GKE is to concentrate on freight transport, Wiener Lokalbahnen is to focus on local public transport, but sees potential also in freight transport. GKE still needs to buy the rolling stock before starting operation in the next few months. Wiener Lokalbahnen, on the other hand, is to make use of European locomotive pools rather than buying its own rolling stock. Stern & Hafferl was granted a limited licence for the Lambach-Wels line.
