Income and poverty dynamic
Article Abstract:
The Economic Council of Canada has implemented a project to research the dynamics of income and poverty. The Council, in conjunction with Statistics Canada, is developing a database that will allow the tracking of individuals over the period of 1982 to 1986. Preliminary research reveals that family change, such as a marriage or common law relationship, a divorce, a death of a family member, and the arrival and departure of children, has a significant effect on a family's economic prospects. Research has revealed a significant amount of volatility in family incomes. Labor market changes alone are not the primary cause of volatility in family incomes. Changes in the composition of families is highly correlated with changes in family income.

Speaking out
Article Abstract:
Economic Council of Canada 'Employment and the Service Economy' Project Dir Gordon Betcherman believes that the pace of the shift to the service economy in Canada and the types of service jobs there differ from patterns elsewhere. The project is undertaken to investigate the labor market. The primary goal is to examine effects of the transition from the goods-producing economy to the service economy. Case studies and statistical techniques will be used to determine the adequacy of training programs for displaced workers, the potential for maintaining high employment, and the implications for industrial relations, especially collective bargaining.
