Article Abstract:
Canadian Economic Council unemployment project Director Surendra Gera says the project will examine central issues in the employment situation. The project will evaluate the 1945 'full-employment' objective in light of current economic conditions. The 'full employment' objective was to achieve a level of employment where everyone who wanted to work could find a job. Research will be conducted to determine if the present unemployment is cyclical or if it is structural in nature. Investigations will be conducted to determine if the failure of real wages to adjust to changing labor market conditions is causing the high unemployment. Regional economic disparities and training policies will be evaluated.

Article Abstract:
Canadian banks are shifting from traditional banking to securities trading, according to Andre Ryba, Director of International Finance, Economic Council of Canada. The globalization of financial markets such as Canada's means that they may ultimately be part of a single, 24-hour-a-day worldwide network. Ryba feels that as these markets become increasingly interdependent, it becomes almost impossible for sovereign nations to conduct independent macroeconomic policies. Ryba believes that Canada should act as an intermediary in solving world economic problems, and that Canada must determine how to shield itself from any adverse effects of these problems.
