Article Abstract:
The chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group, Dhanin Chearavanont, has become dismayed at the lack of government action to support the property and financial sectors in Bangkok. Dhanin does not normally criticize the government but he is very worried that his business empire which had revenues of more then $8 billion in 1996 will be adversely affected. The telecommunications operations have foreign debts of about $800 million and this will increase as the baht depreciates. Dhanin has met with the Prime Minister several times to discuss what should be done.

Thirst for surival
Article Abstract:
Water Net is a new company set up in Thailand by Rangsan Reeveerakul, which sells franchises for bottled water. He had previously supplied electric water purifiers, which were not selling well. Franchisees purchase a filtering machine from Water Net and repay the company from the water they sell. This reduces Water Net's costs and brings in an income, while risks are spread. This example of innovation in Thailand's provinces shows how economic recovery can come about.
