Stage Three of economic and monetary union
Article Abstract:
The European Council accepted on May 2, 1998, the recommendation of the European Commission that the 11 members should join Stage Three of Economic and Monetary Union on Jan 1, 1999. Under Stage Three, the euro will replace the national currencies of the 11 members. The European Monetary Institute's preparations for the euro are now being handled by the European System of Central Banks, which began operating on Jun 1, 1998. The existing Exchange Rate Mechanism central rates will be used to establish the final rates to be adopted on Jan 1, 1999.

The Euro and economic and monetary union
Article Abstract:
There will be three distinct stages in preparations for the introduction of the single European currency in Jan 2002. An announcement will be made up to a year ahead that Stage 3 of economic and monetary union (EMU) will start on a specific date. Stage 3 proper will go ahead on Jan 01, 1999, with the exchange rates of the currencies of the participants being united. The final period, during which the Euro notes would be issued, will begin no less than three years after the start of Stage 3.

The reformed structural funds in the UK, 2000-2006
Article Abstract:
The four European Union structural funds contained within the Agenda 2000 reform initiative are discussed with particular reference to the UK. The European Commission has approved the UK's plans to spend 4,857 million euros over 2000 to 2006 in the four Objective 1 regions. The UK has also been allocated 3,989 billion euros for Objective 2 funding in the same period.
