Stairway to heaven
Article Abstract:
Indonesian-Chinese companies look to Singapore to hedge their bets as unrest grows in Indonesia. Three giant Indonesian-Chinese companies have recently bought companies listed on the Singapore stock exchange. The July riots in Jakarta have spooked the companies as have rumors about President Suharto's poor health. Singapore offers several advantages besides political stability: cheaper money, easier access to worldwide markets, and available management talent. Still, Indonesian companies will not abandon their home market unless there is serious political upheaval.

Obstacle course
Article Abstract:

The country lacks a well-trained work force to contend with visitors from Japan and other countries. One Australian tour operator complained that his firm receives virtually no cooperation from Indonesian tourist authorities.
