Star, Koos set joint venture
Article Abstract:
Star Group Ltd and Koos Group will form two joint ventures as part of a planned $240 million effort to enter Taiwan's cable-television market by acquiring share positions in Taiwanese cable operators and helping them upgrade their networks to digital technology. In Taiwan, cable TV reaches over 80% of the population, some 4.5 million households. However, 80 different operators each have stakes in the market. For its $240 million, Star will gain a 20% stake in China Network Systems, which provides technical services to operators for the launch of digital technology, and and equity stake of up to 20% in an offshore holding company that will invest in the operators. The advantages of the joint venture arrangement are discussed.

C&W Optus strategy impresses analysts
Article Abstract:
Cable and Wireless Optus Ltd. (C&W Optus) has launched a joint venture with Excite@Home Corp as part of its strategy to increase its Internet customer pool. In addition, the firm is bundling its Internet business with pay-television and telephone services to recoup its investments in high-technology equipment. Analysts recommended the firm's shares as a short-term buy because it has not yet fully adjusted to the rapidly expanding market. The joint venture with Excite@Home Corp. is expected to be fully online by the end of 1999.
