Start date of 2005 is set for new airport in Thailand---pending Japanese loan

Thailand's Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is expects the construction contracts for a second international airport in Bangkok to be signed by this year's end, allowing completion by 2004. Agreements were intact by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to issue soft loans, on the condition that JBIC is allowed to approve the blueprint and the contractors. Shinawatra said foreign-currency loans are not needed as much now, due to import content lowering, and that the Thai government will provide the project funding if JBIC does not accept the blueprint in the needed time.

Italian-Thai to build airport
Article Abstract:
Italian-Thai Development PLC is part of the consortium that includes Takenaka Corp. and Obayashi Corp., both of Japan, that has won the tender to build the newest international airport in Thailand. The wining bid for the project was 36.67 billion baht ($818.9 million).
