Start-up size and industrial dynamics: some evidence from Italian manufacturing
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to examine the industry dynamics in Italy and the performance of start-up manufacturing companies and its effects on the general economy. Results of the study were used in an empirical test of Gibrat's law. Gibrat's Law of Proportionate Effect states that firm growth is independent of firm size. Empirical test results indicate that Gibrat's law does not hold and that Italian industry dynamics are not different from those in other countries.

Post-entry behaviour and the cycle: evidence from Germany
Article Abstract:
Previous studies on the post-entry performance of new business enterprises have focused more on the structural determinants of post-entry behavior and the relationship between survival and industry-level performance, neglecting to explain the relationship between the survival and growth of firms and aggregate economic fluctuations. The characteristics of the growth and exit of new entrants and aggregate economic fluctuations in Germany are presented.

Innovation, growth and survival
Article Abstract:
Previous studies have shown that survival and post-entry growth rates may vary among industries. However, no explanation as to why this is so has been posited. Closer study reveals that this phenomenon is a result of underlying technological conditions in an industry. In highly-innovative industries, new entrants may not survive for long if they are unable to launch a viable product that can compete with the products of established firms.
