The economic downturn in Japan is boosting the appeal of the ruling Liberal Democrats (LDP), since voters appear to be unwilling to endure the uncertainty of governmental change during hard times. Nominal LDP leader Kiichi Miyazawa should keep his majority in the Diet, but Miyazawa's power base within the LDP remains shaky.
