Call for action
Article Abstract:
Vietnam war veteran and Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona has become an increasingly important adviser to presumptive Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole. McCain is concerned about heavy-handed diplomatic tactics used by China and advocates a firmer US line towards Chinese transgressions. Some notable Republicans including former secretary of state Henry Kissinger disagree with McCain's view. McCain remains supportive of renewing Most Favored Nation trading status for China.

Beating a retreat: U.S. defence secretary axes his pet China project
Article Abstract:
The US Department of Defense has decided to terminate the US-China Joint Defense Conversion Commission (JDCC) after just 21 months because of limited activity and soured relations with China. The JDCC was formed to help Chinese military plants convert to nonmilitary production, but the technology transferred from the US to China has worried many members of the US Congress. There have been claims that some technologies may simply allow China to modernize its military.
