Struggle for power
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's electricity is supplied by two utility companies, Hong Kong Electric Holdings Ltd and China Light and Power Company Ltd. The electric utilities are supervised under schemes of control by Hong Kong to avoid a conflict of interest in serving the needs of their shareholders and the public. The government determines the rate of return and regulates the charges of both companies. In view of the impending contract expiration in 1993, Hong Kong is faced with the dilemma of either opting for deregulation to allow for free competition or settling for a contract renewal.

Article Abstract:
The 1,500-kilometertransmission line project A500 Power Line in Vietnam may lessen the chances of the country to receive much needed financial loans from international lending institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. This project has been designedto carry elctricity from the Hoa-Binh hydroelectric power station southwest of Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City which is plagued by brownouts reaching up to as long as four days a week. However, reports of construction delays, cost overruns, poor planning and corruption may weaken Vietnam's credit image.
