Summer's troubles
Article Abstract:
Horst Kohler has been put forward as a possible new head for the International Monetary Fund, after the initial German candidate was rejected. The US Treasury is not enthusiastic, but could face diplomatic problems if Kohler is vetoed. Meanwhile, a congressional report calls for reforms for both the IMF and World Bank. There is concern that criticisms in the report could be used by opponents of the IMF, and that poorer companies could be hit if debt-reduction is made conditional on changes to these institutions.

The bumpy ride of Joe Stiglitz
Article Abstract:
Chief economist, Joe Stiglitz, has left the World Bank, and he could be criticized for having been negative about the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, rather than proposing solutions. The World Bank could impose fewer conditions if it lent to countries with policies it approved of, but this would mean that funds would tend to go to the richer countries. Manpower would be focused on poorer countries if education were provided for them to improve their policies.
