Survival skills: retailing in South America

Foreign hypermarkets are becoming numerous in Latin America, which is starting to crowd out smaller, domestic retailers. But local retailers are starting to counter the trend with their superior knowledge of local tastes. Lower costs for retailing technology are also helping domestic retailers.

The lesson the locals learnt a little too quickly

Retailers are loosing money due to failing efforts in stores and shopping centers in Asia. Many retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Lane Crawford, are either marketing the wrong products to Asians or not accounting for their limited spending practices.
