President Ghulam Ishaq Khan has ordered the army into the southern Sindh province of Pakistan to quiet the ethnic unrest there. Some fear that the army might take this opportunity to seize power. To prevent this, Ishaq Khan has refrained from giving the army the sweeping powers the constitution allows.

Changing generals

President Ghulam Ishaq Khan selected General Abdul Waheed over several other generals to succeed the late General Asif Nawaz as head of Pakistan's military. The last time a lesser known general, Zia Ul Haq, was promoted into that position he seized power.
