Sustainably managed forestry: the UK's timber suppliers are fighting back in the green battle over timber imports and sustainable forest management
Article Abstract:
Environmental groups have drawn attention to the limited national regulations relating to forestry. There continue to be arguments about whether temperate but not tropical hardwoods should be specified and about which countries timber should be sourced from. Forests Forever is the timber supply trade pressure group which aims to safeguard forests throughout the world and promote wood as an evironmentally friendly material. It has called for improvements in self-regulation .

A report Great Britain plc: the Environmental Balance Sheet presents ideas for reform. These include regional resource-use planning to provide economies of scale on waste collection logistics, and extended use of regulation, such as the landfill tax. The scope of the report involves solid wastes, gaseous wastes and liquid wastes, and lists promising initiatives.

Timber - not green enough?: timber is often seen as one of the 'greenest' materials. But a Friends of the Earth report sees this sector as currently unsustainable
Article Abstract:
Friends of the Earth argues that the rate of global timber consumption is unsustainable and that importing instead of farming our own timber is inefficient. It is also concerned about pre and post consumer waste and believes that there are opportunities to use agricultural wastes as partial or complete substitutes for some timber based products.
