Russia's cultivation of relations with China, South Korea and India is not to reject the West, but to kindle trade relationships. Western aid has not been enough to draw Russia out of its economic slump. Trade relations with Asia could help improve the economy.

Japan's trade surplus continues to grow, incurring the wrath of their trading partners, especially the US. While US automakers increasingly talk about the need for protectionism, the US deficit with Japan is actually shrinking in comparison with other nations.
