Article Abstract:
The intervention of the military in a simple ethnic churchproblem of Batak Protestant Christian in northern Sumatra sparked protests fromstudents and the clergy. When the church's synod failed to select a successor to outgoing bishop S.A.E. Nababan, a factionalistic crisis ensued. The internalconflict in the church was further complicated by the intervention of regional military commander Gen Pramono who appointed S.M. Siahaan as acting bishop. Demonstrations, arrests, detentions and even beatings followed Siahaan's assumption of office.
