System failure
Article Abstract:
The sharp rise in rice exports from Vietnam in 1998 has served to highlight the very inefficient nature of the country's state-run rice-export system. In early Apr 1998, the government placed a ceiling on rice exports for the first half of the year and prohibited new sales deals. Exporters had booked contracts for 3 million tonnes of rice for delivery in the first half of 1998, but found it hard to fill orders because of the pressure placed on storage, transport and loading facilities by large volumes of rice. The government will now permit new sales contracts, but will impose a 1% tax on each tonne of medium- to high-quality rice exported.

Murdoch's gambit: StarTV and Indovision attempt a delicate tie-up
Article Abstract:
Rupert Murdoch's StarTV and Peter Gontha's Indovision plan to roll out a joint satellite-TV network in July 1996, based on an agreement reached in early 1995. Critics say there is little content yet available, and past attempts at similar ventures have failed amid marketing problems. StarTV executive David Dennis has targeted the middle and upper-middle classes as having enough income and free time to be interested, a switch from past efforts to woo wealthy watchers. The overall plan mirrors Murdoch's approach to the region.

Battle of the titans: Murdoch cracks tough Asian television market
Article Abstract:
Rupert Murdoch has apparently gained entry into China's highly resistant satellite-broadcast tv market, though he had to make many concessions. On Mar 25, 1996, Murdoch's Star TV operation announced it is forming Phoenix Satellite Television in Hong Kong to run a Chinese-language network in Asia, meaning China. Phoenix, formed in partnership with Today's Asia and China Wise, may benefit from their reputed secret Beijing ties. China Central Television, China's national broadcaster, opposed the move but will be involved.
