TEA INDUSTRY - WILL IT CONTINUE TO CHEER INVESTORS?
Article Abstract:
The production of tea in India in 1997-98 was 811 million kg (780 million kg in 1996-97). There was shortfall of tea supplies in the global markets. The demand for tea increased. Consequently, the price of tea increased. Tea production in India is expected to be 840 million kg in 1998-99. Globally, Indian tea was sold at Rs77.65 between April 1998 and June 1998 (Rs61.50 in the same period of 1997). India consumed 75 percent of its production. The Indian tea market is growing by about 3 percent per annum. The economic turmoil in Russia may hit India as 45 percent of India's tea exports are to Russia. The Government of India has permitted the import of tea from SAARC countries with an import duty of 10 percent only. Despite these constraints, the tea industry in India expects better prospects. The rise in the value of tea stocks is likely to be dependent on the earnings growth expectations of tea companies. (uh)
