THE REAL ECONOMY IN 1997-98: MANUFACTURING SECTOR
Article Abstract:
The manufacturing sector, which accounts for 79.36 percent in the overall index of industrial production (IIP), posted a growth rate of 6.6 percent in 1997-98 against 6.7 percent in 1996-97. The contribution of the manufacturing sector to the overall IIP fell to 81.9 percent in 1997-98 from 96.7 percent in 1996-97. Some of the sub groups that showed an increased growth rate were basic chemicals and chemical products, non-metallic mineral products and machinery. Transport equipment, wood and wood products, furniture and other manufacturing industries showed a negative growth in 1997-98. (khr)

Article Abstract:
The Central Statistical Organisation states that gross domestic saving reached a peak of 26.1 percent in 1996-97. Household savings as a percentage of gross domestic product has increased from 18.8 percent in 1995-96 to 20.3 percent in 1996-97. The preliminary estimates for 1997-98 show that household financial saving has increased to 11.4 percent due to an increase in bank deposits and contractual savings mobilised from the household segment. But the segment's financial saving in currency and shares and debentures has declined. (khr)

THE REAL ECONOMY IN 1997-98: FOREIGN COLLABORATIONS AND JOINT VENTURES
Article Abstract:
A total number of 2325 foreign collaborations were approved in 1997 compared to 950 approvals in 1991. Most of the collaborations were in the sectors of fuel and power generation, telecommunication, computer software and hardware, engineering and services like consultancy and tourism. Expenditure on research and development as a percentage of total expenditure has grown from 0.27 percent in 1995-96 to 0.31 percent in 1996-97. (khr)
