Article Abstract:
The software industry has sought the government's approval for permitting American Depository Receipts and listings in US markets. The National Assocaition for Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) has recommended zero duty on all kinds of software in the 1998-99 budget. Hardware manufacturers want the duty on stepper motor to be reduced from 40 percent to 20 percent, duty on key switches to be reduced from 20 percent to 10 percent and duty on disk drives to be reduced from 20 percent to zero percent. The excise duty on finished products must be reduced from 13 percent to 8 percent while the excise duty on components must be reduced to 18 percent. (gs)

Article Abstract:
The housing sector comprising construction firms and housing finance companies are likely to get some major fiscal concessions in the 1998-99 budget. Housing is likely to secure the status of infrastructure with a 5 year tax holiday. Housing finance companies may get concession to raise low cost funds for constructing housing for vulnerable sections of population. The government is likely to speed up foreclosure procedures and reduce stamp duty. Rental housing also may get crucial benefits. Currently 20 percent of actual rent received is deducted under income tax. This may be increased to 50 percent. (gs)

Article Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry wants the customs duty on raw material and drug intermediates to be reduced from 35 percent to 15 percent in the 1998-99 budget. The customs duty on bulk drugs should be reduced to 25 percent. Excise duty on bulk drugs and formulations should be reduced to 10 percent. Leading pharmaceutical firms like Orchid Chemicals, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Ranbaxy, Cipla and Nicholas Piramal will benefit if the custom duties are reduced. (gs)
