TRACTOR INDUSTRY: TRYING TIMES AHEAD
Article Abstract:
The tractor industry in India has achieved a compounded annual growth rate of 17.5 percent in the past 3 years. The sales of tractors have fallen to 11 percent due to unexpected rains in northern India in 1997-98. The land available for agriculture increased to 167 million hectares in 1997-98 from 146 million hectares in 1950. The demand for tractors was about 2.38 lakh units in 1997-98. The demand for tractors in 1998-99 is likely to be 2.67 lakh units and 3.24 lakh by 2000 AD. The tractor sales growth for 1998-99 is expected to be less than 15 percent of 1997-98. In April 1998, the tractor industry posted a growth of 11 percent. PUNJAB TRACTORS (PTL)

Punjab Tractors Ltd (PTL) is expanding its production capacity from 25,000 tractors to 60,000 units in 1998-99. It has restructured its unit at Mohali. It has set up a new unit near its existing unit to produce 30,000 tractors. Its tractor sales are likely to be 45,000 units in 1998-99. Its market share was 16 percent in 1997-98. PTL's market share is likely to increase to 18 percent by 2000 AD. Its tractor sales are likely to increase from 39,000 units in 1997-98 to 46,000 in 1998-99. It is likely to buy Mazda engine for its tractors. Its return on capital employed is expected to decline to 53 percent in 1998-99. PTL may pay a higher dividend. Its scrip is trading at Rs750 now.
