TRAI, DOT DIFFER ON REVENUE
Article Abstract:
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are yet to settle differences over the possible effect of Trai's new tariff proposals on DoT's earnings. DoT expects a revenue loss of Rs725.24 crore during 1999-2000 following implementation of TRAI's proposals. It expects to incur a revenue loss of Rs2,664 crore during 2000-2001 and Rs4,494 crore during 2001-2002 AD. TRAI has refused to accept these estimates. According to TRAI, these estimates are not justified since DoT has assumed that decrease in tariff for domestic long distance and international calls will not result in any increase in the volume of traffic. TRAI expects DoT to incur a revenue loss of Rs3,442 crore during 2001-2002 based on a ten percent increase in volume of traffic and a revenue loss of Rs1,889 crore assuming a 25 percent increase in volume of traffic. TRAI FOR MASSIVE HIKE IN PHONE RENTAL, CALL CHARGES
Article Abstract:
Major changes in the telephone tariffs have been suggested by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in its Consultation Paper on Framework and Proposals. It has suggested a cut in the STD rates. It proposes to charge Rs19.50 per minute on calls for a distance of over 1000 km instead of Rs42 per minute charged now. The Trai has also recommended a reduction in the international rates. A call to the US will now cost Rs34 per minute instead of Rs84 per minute. The rental charges will be raised to Rs310 per month from Rs1890 per month. In case of mobile services, it plans to make incoming calls free and raise the rental charges to Rs600 per month from Rs156 per month. In case of pagers, it proposes to raise the rental for the alpha numeric pagers from Rs250 per month to Rs300. (ag)

NEW TELECOM TARIFF BY JAN 31: TRAI
Article Abstract:
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has finalised the tariff structure and will announce the new tariff rates on January 31, 1999. The announcement is delayed because some Parliament members wanted to have their say. TRAI has proposed to increase the local call rates and rental charges. It has suggested reducing the number of free calls for the subscriber and the duration of local call from five minutes to three minutes. It has recommended price reduction of domestic long- distance and international calls by nearly 50 percent, which is opposed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). DoT wants a reduction of only 15-20 percent in the long distance domestic and international calls. (rk)
