MTNL ENTRY INTO CELLULAR GIVES PRIVATE COs THE JITTERS
Article Abstract:
The scrip of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), reached a high of Rs214 from Rs197, a day after a court order allowed it to enter cellular telephone services in Mumbai and Delhi. This is expected to affect the four private cellular operators in the two cities, who have invested around Rs3500 crore in the last three years. MTNL plans to offer the services at much cheaper rates than the existing players. This will be possible if MTNL subsidises its cellular operations with revenue from its basic operations. At present, around 95 percent of the cellular business is routed through MTNL lines. (gsh)
