TWO-WHEELER PRICES TO DIP, COMMERCIAL VEHICLES DEARER
Article Abstract:
The prices of scooters and motorcycles will come down while that of mopeds, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles will increase as a result of the changes in the excise duty structure announced in the Union Budget for 1999-2000. Bajaj Auto Ltd has reduced the price of its scooters by Rs175 to Rs28,500 and that of its motorcycles by Rs320 to Rs45,074. But it has increased the price of its M80 moped by Rs165 to Rs23847, Spirit by Rs150 to Rs18,000 and its three wheelers by Rs500 to Rs53,000. TVS Suzuki has raised the price of its mopeds by Rs100 but does not plan any price reduction for scooters and motorcycles. (khr)

SUNDRAM FINANCE, FIAT AUTO TO FLOAT CAR FINANCE JV

Sundaram Finance Ltd (SFL), a finance company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fidis SpA, a subsidiary of Fiat Auto of Italy. The joint venture will take up exclusive financing of Fiat cars in India. The cars to be funded include Fiat Uno and other models. The tie up is expected to commence its operations from April. Fiat Auto's decision of having an exclusive financing venture is a part of its strategy of foraying into the Indian market in a big way. During 1998, SFL's car finance portfolio is expected to reach Rs250 crore to Rs300 crore. (ag)

MUL JACKS UP PRICES, DAEWOO TO FOLLOW SUIT

Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) is to hike the price of its Omni and Gypsy vehicles with immediate effect. Daewoo Motors India (DMI) is also expected to hike the price of its car. MUL's Omni van is to cost Rs6,600 more, while the soft-top version of the Gypsy is to cost Rs9,500 more and the hard-top version Rs10,200 more. The price of the Gypsy King will increase by Rs11,800 for the soft-top and Rs12,400 for the hard-top model. DMI may increase the price of its Cielo car by Rs20,000 in the next few days. (khr)
