Taiwan's banks attract buyers as credit crunch begins to ease

Standard Chartered PLC of the United Kingdom is to purchase Hsinchu International Bank of Taiwan for $1.2 billion. Citigroup Inc. of the United States is to purchase Bank of Overseas Chinese of Taiwan for approximately $453 million. The acquisitions may aid consolidations in the banking industry particularly if the Taiwanese government sells off stakes in crown banking corporations.
