Taiwan's mood grows more assertive despite cautious voices, mainland's ire

Taiwan is intent on pursuing its bid to become more heard in the international arena, despite harsh criticism from mainland China. Among Taiwan's goals are to attain a seat in the UN and to attend the Nov. 1995 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Several sectors believe that China is offering only token resistance, since Taiwanese investments in the country are too significant.

New age of Taiwan politics finds KMT challenged
Article Abstract:
The Nationalist Party of Taiwan or Kuomintang is fielding its most popular candidates to run for the parliamentary elections in Nov. 1995. The party intends to capture 83 seats in the legislature to maintain its dominance over Taiwanese politics. However, opposition parties are aggressively campaigning to undermine the Kuomintang's lead.

Taiwan election results seen as a vote for better relations with the mainland
Article Abstract:
The ruling Kuomintang Party retained its majority in the 164-member legislature, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party gained four seats while the fledgling New Party up its membership from 7 to 21 in Taiwan's recent legislative elections. The results clearly indicates voter support for closer relations with China.
