Taking the plunge: Formosa Plastics confirms huge petrochemicals plan
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group announced on Mar 29, 1993 that the government had approved plans for a large petrochemical complex on the island's west coast. Company head Y.C. Wang said that the government had agreed to share the cost and to support the project with tax breaks and low-cost water. The complex will be built on five artificial islands and will comprise an oil refinery, naphtha cracker and ethylene plant. Formosa Plastics believes that the complex, to be finished late in the 1990s, will help it capitalize on the predicted high demand for petrochemicals.

Close to you: Acer Computer takes on Southeast Asia from sales base in Singapore
Article Abstract:
Acer Computer International cites many advantages and few drawbacks to its selection of Singapore as a home base for regional sales of the Taiwan-based computer company Acer. Labor shortages and higher rents are bothering some other companies, but the quick, efficient port and airport and the favorable tax treatment the govt gives foreign companies more than offset that. Japan, the US, and Britain supply most of the foreign investment that continues to flood Singapore, up 49% in 1994 to S$5.8 billion for manufacturing projects.
