Mergers and acquisitions activity was strong in the United kingdom in 1997 despite the Asian financial crisis and a national election during that year. Mor than 1,800 corporate sales were carried out, with a total value of 64 billion pounds sterling. Quoted companies accounted for 83 of the total. UK companies showed interest in investing in Europe in 1997, while in 1996 more interest was focused on the US. Purely UK deals accounted for 1,300 of the total in 1997.

The insurance factor

Insurance is often regarded as a minor issue in the process of buyouts, but inclusion at the beginning of the transaction can prevent unforeseen circumstances becoming major problems later on. Insurance costs must be assessed early to be properly included in the overall buyout. Venture capitalists need the security of having access to expert insurance advice to ensure adequate financial information is on hand when deciding to purchase a business.
