Tall block goes against the grain in West London
Article Abstract:
The social housing scheme designed in West London by Pollard Thomas & Edwards Architects (PTE) flies in the face of conventional wisdom about what social housing should look like. The site was a triangular shape, with one side being formed by a road which a flyover running along it at third-storey level. PTE's dramatic solution includes six mews houses along the site's most sheltered side, with the rest of the accommodation being housed in a nine-storey triangular block in the opposite corner. The design maximises daylight in living rooms and minimises noise from the flyover.

Docklands block provides urban village gateway
Article Abstract:
The crescent-shaped social housing block designed by Tibbalds Munro for the West Silvertown Urban Village in London Docklands is very much based on a belief that social housing should not be stigmatised or hidden away in the most unattractive parts of the site. Social housing accounts for one third of the 1000-unit site, and Tibbalds has written 'village codes' or guidance on the design of the other housing areas. The crescent-shaped block is the gateway building to the dock front, and will include 53 flats, on five storeys, and 635 sq mt of retail units.
