Tapping India for antibiotics
Article Abstract:
Due to the anthrax scare in the United States recently, the U.S. government is considering sources of generic antibiotics from Indian company Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. Patent laws in the U.S. state that currently Bayer AG is the only company permitted to sell ciprofloxacin, but emergency situations may allow compulsory licensing. Bayer AG sells Cipro at a wholesale price of $4.67 per pill, and the U.S. government is being charged a discounted price of $1.83, but the Indian-made drug sells for around 10.4 cents.

Powell seeks to assure leaders in India and Pakistan
Article Abstract:
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell met with Indian officials to assure them about America's relationship with Pakistan, a major rival of India. An agreement was also signed regarding an extradition treaty and the effort to combat terrorism. India and Pakistan are fighting over a territory called Kashmir, which both countries claim as their own. Powell hopes to keep both countries focused on participating in the antiterrorism coalition.
