Tax harmonisation
Article Abstract:
The European Commission is looking at harmonizing taxation in member states after pressure from some countries, such as Germany, who see companies using the different rates of taxation to avoid paying taxes. Yet different levels of taxation allows countries to set taxes which suit their economic status. The harmonisation of taxes would stop countries having to introduce unsuitable taxation systems which fail to raise sufficient funds, in order to be competitive with other nations. Countries would also no longer be able to lower taxes to have an unfair advantage over other member states.

Funding the National Health Service
Article Abstract:
There is extensive debate in the UK about whether the state can continue to fund the National Health Service (NHS) and the many different services it provides. Those who support continued state funding of the NHS claim that leaving health care to the market may lead to a failure to provide an efficient allocation of resources and to inequalities in access to health care. There are a number of possible ways to deal with rising pressures on the NHS, including reducing the extent of NHS provision and reducing the costs of health care.
